The atmosphere of this album is fantastic. Makes you feel like you're knee-deep in the trenches drenched in mud, filth, sweat, and blood. Truly encapsulates the horrors of World War I, and the fact that the lyrics of some of the songs are taken from old war letters really adds to the authenticity. Another one of those bands whose music is impossible to fit under a simple label or tag, as it's a masterful blend of so many styles with lots of emotions. A bit like "An Abstract Illusion", one of those unique blends, folk, depressive, second wave, and atmospheric black metal styles into an exploratory whole, "the sum greater than its elements combined" kind of art... but it's the end result that counts, and I really liked it. Took a few listens and open-mindedness though.
